Identify this time travel movie from my childhood please?

I only faintly remember this movie, but I have been tangentially thinking about it for years and cannot for the life of me remember the title or locate it online. The main plot was, if I remember correctly, an organization? and the main character realizing he was going to be killed in the future so he goes back in time and leaves clues and hints and items for his past self to prevent his death (ie weapons, opportune escape routes, keys, etc) I remember a subway scene in which the main character uses a lighter and hairspray to flamethrower a bad guy. Epic fight scene at the end I think. Thanks to anyone who can help!
