How do i get my credit score up?

im in the process of disputing some things that were on my credit report that i do not recognize so i can get a loan out but i looked up my score and seen it was a very low 551 (YIKES!) how can i get it higher besides credit cards? And will my score go up once these items that are under investigation are deleted off my report?
